- “In Mallard nobody married dark. Nobody left either, but Desiree had already done that. Marrying a dark man and dragging his blue-black child all over the town was one step too far” (Bennett 5). The author includes this in the text because it shows the irony that the great-granddaughter of the founder of Mallad would choose to marry someone dark. This also shows Mallard's inability to accept change and be open to anything different.

- An example of something that Kennedy loves is, "She'd already learned two main things about Kennedy Sanders: she wanted to be a Broadway star and she carried herself like every aggrieved actress, a little prideful, a little wounded (TVH 263). Kennedy loves to be an actress because its the one thing she can do that she won't be judged. She can be free of her mind and free of herself.

- An example of who Stella talked about is, "Forget spying out of curiosity--now she glanced through the blinds before fetching the mail, just to ensure that she wouldn't run into Loretta" (TVH 186). Stella talks about and avoids her new Black neighbors because she fears them, she fears them finding out her secret and exposing her. So she does the only thing she knows how and that is to be white and ignorant.
