  • In 1886, an officer went to a laundry mat run by Yick Wo, an Aisan man and gave him a fine of $10 because of a law that prohibited Asians or other races from owning stores.

  • Yick Wo refused to pay the fine and was arrested by the officer and taken to prison. At the same time, Wo Lee was also arrested. Both decided to file a lawsuit.
  • The supreme court had to ask if fining and arresting Yick Wo had violated his 14th amendment rights.
  • The court unanimously ruled in favor of Yick Wo, allowing him and other Aisan Americans to own stores freely.
