  • A social system existing in Medieval Europe in which people worked and fought for nobles who gave them land and protection in return.
  • Nobles
  • The Pope was the leader of the church and was very powerful. The Church also received 10% of the kingdom's tithes which made the Pope very wealthy.
  • Knights
  • Fall on you sword!
  • The Monarch was the top ruler of the kingdom and owned all of the land. Since he could not control all on this land on his own he divided it among his nobles in return for loyalty.
  • Pheasants
  • This is so boring...
  • The nobles reported directly to the king and owned large plots of land given to them by the the king for their loyalty. The nobles divided their land among the knights for their loyalty to the noble. These knights could be used at any time and had to do whatever the noble said.
  • I'll give you this land if you pledge yourself to me.
  • Deal!
  • The knights were completely loyal to their noble and would do whatever the noble said. The land given to them by their noble belonged to the knight and it came with anything on the land including pheasants, crops, and sometimes even entire villages.
  • Okay...
  • The majority of the population were pheasants. Few pheasant were free to own their own businesses. Most were more like slaves or farmers. If the land the pheasants lived on got sold or given to a different person the pheasants went with the land and then belonged to the new owner.
