Troy uses drinking as a way to cope with fear and loss, and to feel like he’s in control. By saying he’s wrestled with Death he tries to appear strong, but really he’s masking his pain and struggles. Alcohol helps him avoid the emotional weight he carries, showing that he can’t truly face life sober.

- Troy way of thinking is that he is the man of the house,“It’s my responsibility! You understand that? A man got to take care of his family” (Wilson39).Troy expresses love through responsibility not affection. He believes providing for his family is more important than emotional connection, he never gets soft with Cory, his version of love is being cold.
