Before India was colonized by British troops, Indian agriculture was dominated by subsistence farming in small village communities. Farmers usually only grew enough crops to feed themselves and the community. If extra food was gathered due to favourable climatic conditions, this food would be stored and used later on during the year when food would be needed.

Peasants were forced to pay fix amounts of taxes to the zamindars, and most Indian farmers became landless labourers to be able and pay off their taxes. The change in agriculture in India from subsistent farming to a cash crop economy that was benefiting the British, caused famine in India and increased their dependency on food imports from the British.
