- Throughout his rule from 1625-1699, King Charles I of England tried very hard to remove Parliament in the English government. He dissolved many laws passed by them and the system itself three times. This erratic ruling led to a rebellion led by Oliver Cromwell. He and his followers wanted Parliament to replace King Charles.. This led to the English Civil War between the King's supporters, the Cavaliers, and Cromwell's supporters, the Roundheads.
- I am the king of England! We don't need Parliament!
- The people want Parliament; we need Parliament. The monarchy is over!!
- There were over 600 battles fought between the Cavaliers and the Roundheads, lasting from 1642 to 1651. Eventually, in 1649, King Charles I was captured and executed by the Roundheads. Cromwell then seized power and became a military dictator. During his rule, he was able to seize Ireland and established a commonwealth in England. After his death in 1658, the commonwealth collapsed.
- King Charles is dead!! I have many plans for England now that I have gotten rid of that traitor!
- Charles II was the king of Scotland during Cromwell's commonwealth. After Cromwell's death, he restored the English monarchy, but was forced to accept the role of a limited monarch to be able to reclaim the throne. James I was the brother of Charles II. His rule over England led to the formation of political parties. Throughout his rule he showed favoritism to Catholics over Christians and also neglected the needs of his people.
- I'm Charles the Second! The better Charles.
- And I'm James, his catholic brother.
