- Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft are celebrating their engagement with their family
- An Inspector arrives at the house with the news of a an Eva Smith drinking disinfectant and committing suicide. He wants to ask them all questions
- Two hours ago a young women died in the infirmary.
- Inspector Goole reveals she used to work in Mr Birling's factory but he refuses to take any responsibility.
- I can't accept any responsibility.

- Theinspector further reveals that Sheila's jealousy meant that Eva lost her job. Sheila takes full responsibility for her death

- It didn't seem anything very terrible at the time.
- Gerald reluctantly confesses his affair with Eva after a while of debating whether or not to share with the Inspector. Sheila acknowledges his honesty but returns the new ring
- I'm rather more upset by this business than I probably appear to be.
- It is brought to light that Eva had come to Sybil Birling but she had turned her away. She feels no remorse for her actions.
- I have nothing to be ashamed of so I do not wish to speak of it any further.
