- The third estate declared themselves the National Assembly and started to draft a constitution. It was lead by Abbe Sieyes and Mirabeau.

- all the good crops have been hoarded
- while the National Assembly was busy. a severe winter meant bad harvest. the price of bread rose. women had been angry after standing in line for hours.
- rumors spread from village to village that the lords of the manor had hired bands of brigands who were on their way to destroy the ripe crops
- Peasants in several districts seized hoes and pitchforks and attacked chateaux . they looted the hoarded grains. a number of nobles had fled from their homes
- the king had ordered to open fire. Some 7000 men and women gathered and broke into government offices. they freed the prisoners of bastille and it was demolished and its stone fragments were sold as souvenirs

- Louis XVI finally accorded recognition to the national assembly and accepted the principle that his powers would now on be checked by a constitution
