  • A Child's Hero
  • It was the night after my Grandpa's funeral, and I was only eight years old. I've been told I had a lot to live up to, but I had no idea what they talked about.
  • And so she went on to tell me the story of my grandfather's life...

  • Artist's Statement
  • I chose to write this story because it involved a story that I was told that I think about all the time. The lesson that I intended to teach was that there are real-world examples of men and women who had dreams that the world tried to put a halt to and cause to cease, but some people are very strong--like my grandfather--and can work through the adversity, and come out on top, thus conquering their dream. As for my artistic choices, I chose to go online simply for the level of organization and cleanliness that it offers. Twice in this comic, I chose to use a character without a border to almost break the barrier between the work and the reader. When that character pops up, he talks to the reader, which I chose so that the readers could relate more to the story, and get a more thorough understanding. I also used an arrow to indicate a time change, and I left it ambiguous from a library to a lab. Hopefully, the reader will interpret that as those eight years spent studying and getting a degree. At the bottom of that page, I used a thought bubble to indicate what I was thinking about during that story. I was inspired by the story of my grandfather and wanted to metaphorically be the king of scientists around the world. For clarity, I used a thought bubble on the first page to indicate how my grandmother is beginning to think about my grandfather. I also used the last page as just one panel because I wanted to cap off the story big, and leave enough room for the speech bubble. I hope you enjoyed this little story and were also a little motivated to stick with your dreams no matter how much everything else is telling you no.
