A failed experiment gives birth to a new virus that rapidly decomposes organic matter but does not kill the infected user giving similar traits of a zombie.
The newly birthed virus started to spread quickly, already starting it's attack on the human race.
The world is told about the virus.
Soldiers were sent out to take down the infected but the outbreak was too large for the government too handle and ended up with the outbreak taking over.
The protagonist is being told about the virus and since the government no longer exists that he needs to leave prison and fend for himself.
The protagonist is left outside to survive on his own.
