Ever since I was a kid, I remember adults lying about things. From where my baby teeth went to the passing of a relative, there was always a cover up for the harsh truth.
Still, I had no idea just how much of my knowledge was lies. Sugarcoated statements fed to me, so I wouldn't be upset or uncomfortable.

And that was my introduction to Native American history: Accurate addition. Up until this point, my teachers and other adult figures in my life had made Native Americans and Europeans seem like friends almost.
I remember being pretty upset for the rest of the day.
I felt horrible. I hated that lesson. It was so messed up and to hear it be talked about so casually was distressing. No one else seemed particularly bothered though.#160;
My mom had a talk with me later about race and how things worked for minorities. I already#160;knew about slavery, but not to the extent she told me. These kinds of things were always downplayed#160;by history teachers. Slavery was a lot more than captive black people and whipping, as I would learn later.
