- The French Revolution broke down the old social system in France, based on hierarchy to try to create a fairer society for everyone to have more equal rights. In ways it succeeded but caused chaos and challenges along the way. Before the Revolution the French were loyal to the King, monarchy or churches. It was the creation on modern nationalism, shifting loyalty for the people of France to the nation. The French people defined themselves as citizens who shared common rights and responsibilities. The tricolour flag and the national anthem became symbols of national unity and strength.
