  • Waves have certain behaviors!-Refraction is the bending of a wave due to a change in speed.-Diffraction is the bending of waves around obstacles and openings.-Transmission involves waves passing through a given point/medium.-Absorption is when matter takes in energy from the wave.-Reflection is when a wave bounces off and travels in a different direction.

  • As for different lenses, there are concave and convex lenses!Concave lenses curve inward while convex lenses curve outward and allow images to appear closer than they actually are!Other differences include that concave lens spread out while convex lenses bring to a focal point.AND... Concave lenses are thicker at the edges and thinner in the center while convex lenses are thicker in the center. Some examples of concave lenses include corrective glasses!Eyes, microscopes, and magnifying glasses are all examples of convex lenses.
  • Well... what about the different kinds of lenses?
  • SOUND WAVES! They are all around us, stacy! Sound waves are mechanical waves! Longitudinal waves to be more specific! When they are produced, a vibration must be formed. As they are mechanical waves, when they travel they must have a medium! When someone talks about a sounds pitch or loudness, they are referring to their frequency and amplitude which determines these unique features. As for echo, it is the reflection of sound. Echo is increased when there are hard, smooth surfaces (EX: gyms). Humans and animals are constantly using sound to our advantage!
  • You mentioned sound earlier... what does that have anything to do with this?
  • AH! Sound waves... what am I forgetting... LIGHT WAVES! Light waves are electromagnetic waves as they don't require a medium to transfer energy. This also makes light waves transverse waves. Light waves help us see! They can be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted. With this in mind, when you see certain colors such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, and everything in between; you are looking at reflected light. For instance, since my sweater is red it is reflected red light! Speaking of colors, colors have different wavelengths with red having the longest and violet having the shortest. Whether an item is opaque like my sweater, translucent like certain kinds of glass, or transparent like water it depends on how light behaves.
  • How interesting! I enjoyed learning all about waves! How they are all different and all around us all the time!
