- During the 20th century, Cuba had a lot of political problems. Americans owned a lot of cuban land and in turn most of Cuba's trade was with the United States.
- This is Fulgencio Batista. He was the dictator of Cuba. He was originally president but later gained so much power he became a dictator. He was not very liked as Cuba's leader. During his role healthcare and education was down, and poverty was up.
- BOOOOO!!!!!!
- A man named Fidel Castro led a rebellion against Batista. He was able to overthrow the government because of his large following. Castro then become the new dictator of Cuba. Cuba became communist and Castro declared all privately owned land is now the governments.
- Supporters of Batista were put in jail or killed by the firing squad.
- There was no longer freedom of speech. Churches were outlawed. Television and radio studios were closed. The government was the only source for news. People could not speak.

- The USA no longer traded with Cuba. So Cuba became friends with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union and Cuba started to trade sugar cane, weapons, and the Soviet Union helped train Cuban soldiers.
