  • The Population Registration Act
  • I believe you are Bantu!!
  • The Population Registration Act: Apartheid
  • Sorry you can't get married....it is the law!
  • The Population Registration Act was passed in 1950, in South Africa, and it defined in clear terms who belonged to a particular race.
  • THIS IS NOT FAIR!!!!!
  • This law classified people into three racial groups: White (European), Coloured ( Mixed race or Asian), and Bantu (Black African).
  • CANCELLED!
  • Marriages between races were banned in order to maintain racial purity.
  • If the authorities had doubt as to the color of a persons skin, they would resort to a "pencil in hair test". A pencil was pushed into the person's hair, and if it remained in the persons hair without dropping, it meant frizzy hair. The person would be classified as colored. If the pencil dropped out the person would be classified as white.
  • The South African Parliament cancelled this act on June 17, 1991.
