- In the late 18th century, the Ancient Regime, France, was unequal. The society was divided up into 3 parts. (Clergy, Nobility, Commoners).

- While the clergy and nobles enjoyed many social privileges, the commoners paid heavy taxes and worked alot manual labor.

- In 1789, King Louis XVI gathered the Estates-General to address these issues.

- The third estate (the commoners) formed a National Constituent Assembly.They were going to create a new constitution.

- On July 14 1789, citizens stormed the Bastille, a big prison, to secure weapons and ammo.

- In 1789, the Rights of Man and the Citizen was adopted by the National Assembly — a new set of laws that promised freedom, equality, and rights for all citizens in France.

- During the Reign of Terror (1793-94), between 20,000 and 40,000 people were killed, including some of the same people who helped start the revolution.

- Napoleon took control, ending the French Revolution and starting the era of Napoleon.

- Napoleon took control in the Coup of 18 Brumaire and turned the Republic into the French Empire. While the Revolution didn’t stop a new ruler from rising, it still inspired other revolutions and ideas about freedom and rights around the world.

- The Revolution had long-term effects because its ideas about people having power, basic rights, and fair governments still influence democracies today. In the short term, the French Revolution led to significant political and social changes.
