- The American Dream
- The American dream is what Amy's mother wants and strives for especially in her daughter. She wants her to be successful and have a good future but the way she portrays and communicates this desire pushes her daughter away. "My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get good retirement." (Tan Page 1) This quote shows how her mother thought of America how you could be and do anything and become successful.
