  • Once upon a time, there were two animal friends, Doug and Kevin. Doug was a dog and Kevin was a cat. These two friends lived in the same house with their human owner, Jerry, and they would play all day, every day.

  • One night, while Kevin the cat was sleeping in his room upstairs, he awoke from his slumber because of a loud noise coming from downstairs.

  • Thud! Splash! Kevin went downstairs to see what was going on. It was Doug. He was rummaging through the refrigerator again. Kevin saw the jar of pickles that broke on the floor. “Doug, what are you doing?” said Kevin. “Just grabbing a late night snack,” Doug answered.

  • “You know that food is only for Jerry and he doesn’t like it when we eat his food.” "He wouldn't notice if I ate just one sandwich, right?" said DougDoug, this is the fifth time that I've caught you eating food from the fridge this week and it's only Tuesday."

  • “But, I was hungry,” answered Doug. “Put the food back in the fridge and go to sleep, before we get caught!” Exclaimed Kevin“Fine”

  • The two friends went back to sleep and woke up the next morning to play fetch with their owner. While they were playing fetch, Kevin noticed that he was retrieving the balls much faster than Doug was. "What's wrong with you," asked Kevin "Idk, my stomach really hurts, it kinda feels like it's burning!" answered Doug.

  • "I told you not to eat all that human food, I guarantee that's what is hurting your stomach ""No," said Doug, waving him off.Doug and Kevin went back inside their house and their owner, Jerry, put their food in their bowls before he left home for work. “I’m starving,” said Kevin to Doug. No answer.

  • Kevin continued to eat his food until his bowl was completely clean. He looked at Doug and his bowl was still completely filled with food."Why aren't you eating?" asked Kevin. "You haven't eaten all day.""I'm not really hungry," answered Doug."You're getting so used to human food that you can't even eat your own food," said Kevin.No, I'm not really in the mood to eat anything right now and there is still a burning feeling in my stomach and chest. I think I'll just go to sleep."

  • As Doug went to sleep, Kevin heard coughing coming from Doug's room. Now Kevin was seriously worried about Doug so he made a call to his friend Steven the Snail. Steven the snail is very smart and helps the whole neighborhood with their problems. Steven said he would come to the house at night to see what was wrong with Doug.

  • Steven arrived at the house while Doug and Kevin explained all of Doug's symptoms to him. They mentioned coughing, burning chest, and loss of appetite. "Ahh, I see. You must have GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease," said Steven. "What's that?" asked Kevin and Doug.

  • “So basically, when you eat, food goes down a tube called the esophagus and into your stomach, where it gets squished and mixed with special juice that helps break it down.”

  • “At the top of your stomach is a little door that opens to let food in, then closes to keep it there. But sometimes, that door doesn't close tight enough. When that happens, the food and juice can sneak back up into the tube. This is called reflux. This causes the burning feeling in your chest and throat. “

  • “But why does it make it burn?” asked Doug“In the stomach there are special cells that are designed to hold the stomach juice. In the esophagus the cells there are not as strong as the stomach cells to touch the stomach juice. If the juice comes back up into the esophagus, it hurts those unprotected cells. They can get red, irritated, and swollen.”

  • “When this happens a lot, the cells try to fix themselves, but they might still feel sore. That’s why GERD causes your chest or throat to burn.”“Wow that sounds pretty painful,” said Kevin. “How did he get this disease? Can I get GERD?”

  • “Sometimes, the build for certain body parts — like the tiny door between your stomach and your food tube (esophagus) — might not be perfect. Like if the door is a little weak or slow to close, and this can run in families. That means if someone in your family has GERD, you might have it too.”“It can also be caused by eating unhealthy food and having a bad diet. You just need to go to the vet to get some medication and fix up your diet and you should be good” said Steven.

  • The next day Doug, Kevin, and Jerry went to the vet so that Doug could get checked out professionally and he received the medication. Also, Jerry bought a lock to put on the refrigerator. They lived happily ever after.
