- Debbie is jealous because her best friend, Maureen is hanging out with this girl named Glenna.
- Debbie couldn't go to sleep without feeling like something was different about her and Maureen's relationship.
- Maureen, Debbie, and Glenna were going home. Debbie feels like an island. She thinks she's all alone and left out because Maureen spends more time with Glenna. Glenna's mom then says that Glenna is going on vacation. Debbie feels a sense of pride coming over her because she finally gets to hang out with Maureen. Glenna's mom says that Maureen needs to stay the night because she is going on vacation with them too.
- A wave topples over Debbie's island. She feels the need to get out of the car or she might disappear.
- Maureen sees Debbie's eyes and can tell that she's sad about something. She asks Glenna's mom if she could get out the car. Maureen walked out of the car and caught up with Debbie. She told Maureen what was going on with her and she took it like Debbie was playing. Maureen and Debbie went to the river.
- She told Maureen that she knew Glenna would be find if Debbie wasn't their friend. Maureen couldn't argue with that. They just sat there dangling their feet above the water. It felt like the best afternoon of the summer for Debbie but anything could happen.
