  • It is a very long story, but I will try to tell you the history of the DREAM act and DACA.
  • How did you manage to stay here even though you were undocumented dad?
  • With this act, undocumented students can be temporally protected from deportation and apply for permanent residency if they graduate high school, obtain a GED, or sign up for the military.
  • I propose the Student Adjustment Act of 2001, which lowers the age of the Immigrant Children's Educational Advancement and Dropout Prevention Act of 2001 down to 21 and more.
  • We object!!
  • I propose the DREAM act, which will grant temporary citizenship to those who have graduated high school or obtained a GED.
  • Didn't you support the bill a few years ago?
  •
  • I will no longer deport those who meet the criteria for the D.R.E.A.M. act.
  • In 2001, Representative Luis Gutierrez proposed the "Immigrant Children's Educational Advancement and Dropout Prevention Act of 2001," which would temporarily protect undocumented students from deportation which gained 32 sponsors.
  • So is that how you managed to stay?
  • Yes, I was able to work and go to school here without fear of deportation.
  •
  • One month later, on May 1st, 2001, Chris Cannon proposed the same bill but with some added restrictions. This was called the "Student Adjustment Act of 2001," which was more popular with Congress with 62 sponsors being achieved.
  • I applied to DACA last week!
  • You don't have your papers, you get deported.
  • For the next few years, Luis' initial idea went through many revisions and changes, however in May, 2011, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid introduced the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors, (D.R.E.A.M.) The act faced opposition from Republican members who had one supported it.
  • Wait, what about the DREAM act? That was passed right?
  • Unfortunately, that is not the case.
  • The next year, President Obama announced DACA, (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) on June 15th, 2012, in August of that same year, The US Citizenship and immigration services began accepting applications for DACA
  • PASS THE DREAM ACT!!!
  •
  • Well, what has happened recently?
  • Unfortunately, on September 15th, 2017, The Trump Administration had DACA cease all operations and shut down completely. Those who were already with DACA still had protection, but newcomers didn't get to apply.
  • DACA isn't taking applications anymore.
  •
  • The DREAM act and its many other forms of legislation have been pushed for years, waiting to pass, but it still has yet to happen. Undocumented Dreamers and non Dreamers alike fight for this bill to be passed into law.
  • LET DREAMERS IN
  • PASS THE DREAM ACT
  •
  • Trump was one of DACA's largest opponents and not only stopped accepting DACA applications, but he attempted to cease the protections of DACA recipients. His cause was eventually granted review by the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • I want to challenge DACA at the Supreme Court level!!!
  • Major corporations like Amazon, Starbucks ,and Google lobbied for protection of DACA recipients. They believed Dreamers contributed greatly to the American economy and American business.
  • So where do you and other Dreamers stand today?
  • With Donald Trump losing the 2020 election, and the current administration not attempting to rescind DACA, thousands of other dreamers and myself are protected for now.

  • THE END
  • Department of Homeland Security vs. Regents of the University of California On June 15th, 2020, Chief Justice John Roberts, in a 5-4 decision, wrote the opinion of the Supreme Court, refusing to rescind DACA because the reasons presented were arbitrary and without standing.
