In 1816, Thomas Gallaudet takes a boat to different countries to find someone willing to help establish a deaf school in America.

Gallaudet meets Laurent Clerc, a deaf frenchman. Laurent agrees to go back to America to help teach deaf people sign language.

Gallaudet Clerc set sail for America.
On June 18th, 1816, Gallaudet and Clerc set sail across the Atlantic Ocean. The voyage took 52 days.

April 15th, 1817.
On April 15th, 1817, Gallaudet and Clerc opened the first American school for deaf people. It was called 'Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons'. Students ranged from 10 to 51 years old.

The school created a new standardized language--American Sign Language--resulting in a deaf community and culture that continues to advance equality.
