  • The Rules I Didn't Know I was Breaking. (Analysis of Shaw and Lee page 158-159)by Stephen Franzen
  • الانزلاق: 2
  • Throughout chapter 4 of Gendered Voices, Feminist Visions: Classic and Contemporary Readings gender norms and expectations are discussed. Shaw and Lee specifically discuss cultural comparisons in beauty on page 158. They're main argument is that cultures have shaped what we believe men and women should behave and look like through comparisons. Specifically, women are compared to the Earth (Shaw and Lee 158), and men are compared to the sky (Shaw and Lee 159).Both comparisons represent qualities expected to be seen in genders. Comparisons like these continue to reinforce hierarchal expectations and lead to a lack of self expression.

  • When reading this reading I couldn't help but think back to the norms society placed on what behavior boys and girls should have in terms of what media they consume. I remember the first time I learned how engrained those norms were into society, even in my fellow classmates

  • As a young boy with only sisters and girl cousins it was inevitable that most of the shows I watched were "girly", things like Victorious, iCarly, Zoe 101, and Good Luck Charlie.

  • Although most of my friends were watching other things like I never thought anything of the fact that we didn't watch the same shows, and I definitely didn't attribute a gender to shows.
  • No I've never watched Transformers, I watched Zoe 101 yesterday.
  • Did you see Transformers yesterday?
  • Oh cool!

  • All that trust in expressing myself was quickly destroyed after a few bad experiences by the time I got to middle school
  • Nothing much, watched some iCarly, that's about it. What about you?
  • Hey what's up Stephen? What'd you do last night?
  • الانزلاق: 7
  • Um, I mean ya I watch it sometimes.
  • You watch that show, isn't it for girls?
  • Bro seriously? That's so funny.
  • Haha ya I guess.

  • I realized that I can't tell people what shows I watch anymore, I don't want to seem girly because they won't let me play soccer with them at recess

  • Dude that was a joke, you think I'd actually watch that stuff. Come on
  • Stephen you gotta tell Johnny what you told me you watched
  • So what happened last night in Avengers Assemble?
  • Sorry bro didn't have time to watch it.

  • Alright, I guess I gotta start watching, or else they'll start to catch on

  • I knew if I couldn't talk about certain shows, like the stereotypical boys shows, I'd be screwed
  • Time to sit here for as long as possible on Disney XD

  • Dude you had to have seen yesterday's Adventure Time episode.

  • It was through experiences like these that I learned most aspects of our life were gendered, and that wasn't saved for adults to deal with, it was for everyone. I was influenced by my sisters on the micro level to watch certain shows they watched. On a meso level I was influenced by the boys in my grade which was about 250 at the time. Finally on the macro level I was influenced by the media industry that ensured boys and girls shows were separate. I learned to change what I watched, and what I shared with others in an effort to not be labeled as gay or feminine. Just as women and men learn to behave like the things they are compared to as Shaw and Lee discussed.
