  • Step 7: Max Hides In The Basement
  • Step 8: Air Raid
  • Pg. 382 "Everyone waited for the ground to shake. That was still an immutable fact, but at least they were distracted by the girl with the book."
  • Step 9: What Have I Done?
  • Pg. 395 "What was I thinking?"
  • Max hides in the cold basement with blankets and a kerosene lamp. He is hidden by paint cans and a drop sheet. Pg. 254 "In the basement of 33 Himmel Street, Max Vandenburg could feel the fists of an entire nation."
  • Step Ten: Drafted
  • While the people of Himmel Street take shelter in the cellar of the Fiedler's house, Liesel reads to them from "The Whistler". It helped to distract everyone from the danger.
  • Step Eleven: Sole Survivor
  • When a parade of Jews are marched down Munich Street, Hans sees one Jewish man that is almost dying. He feels sorry for him and gives him bread.The soldier whipped Hans and the Jew. Now Hans is a target, and Max is in danger and has to leave the Hubermann's basement.
  • Step Twelve: Found
  • Pg. 548 "Is there someone here by the name of Liesel Meminger?"
  • Hans Hubermann is drafted into the German army. Pg. 482 "Stealing is what the army does. Taking your father, and mine."
  • While Liesel was editing her book in the basement, Himmel street was destroyed by bombs. She was the only survivor. The LSE found her when they heard her hammering a paint can with a pencil.
  • Pg. 498 "Only one person survived. She survived because she was sitting in a basement reading through the story of her own life, checking for mistakes."
  • After the war was over, Liesel often spent time with Alex Steiner in his tailor shop. One day in October 1945, Max came in and asked for Liesel. "They hugged and cried and fell to the floor." Pg. 548
