- Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) Nicolaus Copernicus was een Poolse wetenschapper en astronomer die het heliocentrische (zoncentrale) model van het universum voorstelde. Tot en met Copernicus was de academische gemeenschap van mening dat de aarde in het midden van het universum was, dit was bekend als het geocentrische model.
