- Bartering means trading for goods, rather than money. For example, the First nations traded their fur and the French traded their goods instead of money

- The first nations women had a very important role in the fur trade and in normal life. They cooked the food, they skinned the fur for the trading, they cleaned, they looked after children, and helped the early fur traders survive by helping them make clothing, food, etc. They were the ones who would make everything.

- the First nations people gathered their fur made by the women and traded with the French. The French gave the goods for the beaver furs so they can transport them back to France and make beaver fur clothing (hats, Coats, gloves, etc.). The First Nations taught the French on how to survive the harsh winters, make warm clothing, make food, furniture, and housing. Most of the French worked at the NWC ( Northwest Company) or HBC (Hudson Bay Company.)
