Hey traveler! We are the Tohono O'odham people of Arizona.
To the south of the Gila River is where most of us ,Tohono, live.
Most of the Tohono people lived in hilly areas away from rivers
Sorry that i haven't introduced us sooner. I'm Tash and this is my friend Hema
Hi traveler and welcome to our village
We speak an Uto-Aztecan language, like the Pima.
Well I guess I'll start off with our history. We Tohono are also known as Papago, Papatotus, or "Bean people"
Since we live in a dry region of Arizona we migrate seasonally or we would move with neighboring tribes because of water shortages.
We adapted to our land by creating reservoirs, ditches ,and dikes.
But before Father Kino came religion was almost entirely lost.
Because of a Jesuit priest named Eusebio Kino who visited in 1687, we practice Catholicism.
In 1830, Tohonos started using calendar sticks that we used to carve circles and dots to mark important events.
Father Kino's teaching led the building of the San Xavier del Bac. The del Bac is protected and preserved in modern times.
We would even cut notches in the stick to mark nonreligious happenings
Us Tohonos had healers called shamans that could cause and cure sickness.
Modern day Tohono O'odham have a program that educates their communicates on various infectious diseases and how they could prevent them.
On another note our customs consisted of harvesting desert plants like mesquite, agaves, and cactus fruit.
We also planted summer crops like corn, squash, devil's claw, and pinto and tepary beans.
Approximately 24,000 Tohono live off and on 4 Arizona reservations. They make their living in service and manufacturing sectors.
In the early 21st century more than 20,000 people have been identified as Tohono O'odham descent.
We hope you stay longer next time. Goodbye traveler!
