  • After the Japanese defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese War, the people of Russia were upset and attempted a revolution because they wanted Czar Nicholas II to make certain concessions
  • We deserve human rights!!
  • We want a revolution!
  • Nicholas was able survive the attempted revolution of 1905 by signing the October Manifesto which promised certain concessions. He had to intention of keeping true to his word.
  • The First Duma, which acted as parliament, was not elected democratically. The election was rigged so only the upper class would have a voice. They soon began passing laws that Nicholas did not approve of, and he had the Duma dispersed. 
  • The following year, a second Duma was elected, but they suffered the same fate as the first one. They didn't even last a year, and Nicholas deprived peasants and workers of their right to vote
  • The third and fourth Dumas took over next, and they lasted much longer because they were more conservative and Nicholas took all of their real power, and controlled the secret police.
  • The Peasant population was growing very rapidly, the farming techniques were unable to feed the masses.
  • Between 1912 and 1914 their were six thousand separate industrial strikes because of poor working conditions and 10-16 hour workdays.

  • The secret police started to find revolutionaries and Jewish people and deported them
  • Around 1912, three major parties started to gain power and build up their reputation. The three parties were the Bolsheviks, the Mensheviks, and the Social Revolutionaries. The three parties very different views and caused more public rioting and outrage.
  • The February Revolution broke out over a bread riot which involved thousands of strikers. The Tsar sent orders to end the demonstration, and 40 people were killed. To end the revolution, the Tsar had to abdicate, and the monarchy came to an end. 
  • A provisional government was set up after the revolution, but it had many weaknesses and caused more public outrage. 
  • By mid-October, the Bolsheviks attempted to seize power. Their guards took over government buildings and overthrew the provisional government.
