  • Before the 16th century the territory known as Guadalupe now, was occupied by the Western Huetar Kingdom.
  • Then came colonization and many of the indigenous population disappeared.
  • In 1828 a small group of people built houses and they named the place San José. Tobacco was the main production in the area. Eventually it was replaced with coffee.
  • Due to avoid confusion with San José (now the capital) They decided to change the name to Guadalupe in 1851, and in 1855 a church was built.
  • All that was influenced by Raimundo Mora who studied in Mexico and was devoted to the Virgin.
  • There were also Spanish people living in the are and well-educated people who proposed turning the place into an official canton.
  • The history of the placed was heavily influenced by Catholic and Spanish traditions, just like most places around.
  • In 1939 the first school in founded thanks to León Cortés Castro.
