- Kansas became known as Bleeding Kansas. After the Kansas‑Nebraska Act, proslavery and antislavery settlers flooded into Kansas to influence the vote. Violence erupted towns were attacked, homes burned, and John Brown led a deadly raid at Pottawatomie Creek. Kansas became a battleground over slavery, symbolizing the growing national crisis.
