It is certainly strange, not being able to talk to people of a far higher rank than me. That practice was commonplace in my previous job in my home country. I try to wrap my head around the work culture here but sometimes it seems so strict. I hope I get the hang of it

Can't I just tell them upfront?
It's kind of demeaning if a person of a lower rank directly spoke with the manager. It's more appropriate to speak with people who are directly subordinate or superior to you.
Wouldn't that take away the credit from me though? How would they know who came up with the idea.

Well we don’t particularly value individual quality here, our focus is more on the group. We value you more for your group’s work than your own achievements. It’s just how it is here.
