  • It is certainly strange, not being able to talk to people of a far higher rank than me. That practice was commonplace in my previous job in my home country. I try to wrap my head around the work culture here but sometimes it seems so strict. I hope I get the hang of it
  • I'm sorry, what do you mean?
  • You have to refer to me by the correct honorific, call me Tanaka-Sama. Here it is very rude to refer to your seniors by their firstname.
  • Ah okay, sorry for that Tanaka-Sama
  • Good, it's understandable because you're a foreigner but please be mindful of our culture.
  • Tanaka-Sama, I had a few ideas I wanted to bring up with our manager. I think it could help with increasing workflow and effectiveness in our division.
  • You should bring it up with me instead, I'll deliver those ideas to them instead of you.
  • Can't I just tell them upfront?
  • It's kind of demeaning if a person of a lower rank directly spoke with the manager. It's more appropriate to speak with people who are directly subordinate or superior to you.
  • Wouldn't that take away the credit from me though? How would they know who came up with the idea.
  • I see, I understand. I'll elaborate on my ideas then, I hope you and the manager find them useful.
  • Well we don’t particularly value individual quality here, our focus is more on the group. We value you more for your group’s work than your own achievements. It’s just how it is here.
