On February 12, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 just two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This order would effectively put anyone of Japanese Descent into one of twelve internment camps for years. Thousands of innocent families were wrongly sent to these camps. This was done supposedly out of fear for people's safety but instead this was done out of only fear. This was a result of mass hysteria that put innocent Japanese Americans into camps because they were 'saboteurs' or 'spies.' This was a direct effect caused by widespread panic of the bombing on Pearl Harbor.
By October 1942, Executive order 9066 had been set into place, hundreds of thousands of Japanese Americans were now in these internment camps. The camp conditions were in horrid condition, camps were overcrowded, no privacy for a bathroom. Families were separated, people tried to create recreational activities just to make life bearable. Those who tried to escape were shot, many were killed within the walls too. This was suffering caused by the mass hysteria of the attack on Pearl Harbor blaming Japanese Americans due to pre-existing prejudice, people lived out these years in camps suffering, some killed. By 1946, all camps would be gone and people would finally go back to their lives.

In the present day, students now learn about the Japanese Interment Camps, many may even know a relative who was affected by this past incident. We now understand the effects of mass hysteria and how this isn't a simple feeling but rather it can affect hundreds of thousands of innocent people. We have learned that this can create dire situations that lead to real tragic events. We will learn from the past and try to avoid this again and never let our judgment be clouded by fear. 44 years later in 1988, the government formerly acknowledged their mistake and even apologized offering 20,000 in reparations to victims. We use this event as a lesson in history and that real people were hurt and even killed in this brutal situation.
