Understanding Behaviourism and Cognitive psychologyPsychologists study how people learn, think and behave. Two important perspectives that explain learning are Behaviourism and Cognitive Psychology.
Teacher- Today we will examine Behaviourism and Cognitive Psychology and how each explains learning and behaviour.
student- What are those perspectives about? How do they explain learning and behaviour?

Watson- Scientist should study behaviour scientifically through action that can be observed.
Behaviourism John B. Watson is a major founder of behaviourism. In 1913 he argued that psychology should be an objective science that studies observable behaviour rather than introspection. Another psychologist that studied behaviourism is B.F.Skinner, he stated that behaviour is learned through conditioning, rewards and punish
Skinner- Exactly. Reinforcement strengthens behaviour, while punishment reduces it.
Student- So are you saying that behaviour is learned through experiences, rewards and consequences?
For example, when a teacher rewards a student for good behaviour, it is more likely to happen again. If the student is punished, the behaviour is less likely to occur.

Cognitive PsychologyCognitive psychology focuses on internal mental processes such as thinking, memory, perception, and problem solving. Psychologists like Jean Piaget and Ulric Neisser studied how the mind processes information and how people learn.
Piaget- Children actively construct knowledge as they interact with their environment.
Neisser- Exactly. Cognitive psychology studies how the mind processes information.
Student-So learning depends on how people think and understand information?
