- Thomas Gallaudet was inspired to learn more about deaf education when he met the daughter of his neighboors Mason Cogswell . Her name was Alice Cogswell and she lost the ability to hear due to spotted fever,and despite her want to pursue her education she was left without a language or a way to get to a school for the deaf.

- Galludet then traveled to Braidwood in England to learn more about the methods for speech and lip reading offered to deaf children. Sadly though the developers refused to give up their skills and secrets to keep their profitable monopoly. Galludet was unimpressed and disgusted so he searched for a better options in London in a lesson taught by Abbe' Sicard.

- Gallaudet was impressed by Sicard and the French sign education. Sicard noticed this and invited Galludet to come visit the French National Insitute.There he meet Jean Massieu and Laurent Clerc prized pupils of Sicard. He was given a warm welcome and given classes,private tutoring,and was able to study well. Still it was just not enough time to master and teach everything on his own.

- Until Clerc bravely volenterred to go with Gallaudet to the USA to help him start the the school up in America.At first Sicard disapproved of this and refused to let Clerc go.Eventually though he agreed to let him go on an agreement to reserve Clercs religous rights as a Roman Catholic,and make sure that Clerc was being treated well in Hartford.
- So began the journey to Hartford,Connecticut in America. Gallaudet and Clerc sailed aboard a ship called the Mary Augusta . On a long journey across the ocean for 51 days. During tis time Clerc taught Gallaudet the fine points of LSF and in return Gallaudet tutored Clerc some more English.

- Then at last Clerc and Gallaudet arrived in the USA .They started raising funds and had donations until they were finally able to open and create the first school for the deaf ion April 15, 1817 in Hartford,Connecticut. It was called The American Asylum for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb persons. Alice Cogswell was the first to enroll with many other deaf people from all different backrounds who were finally given a chance to get an education thanks to Gallaudet. .
