  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own Enemy
  • Get off my porch or your going to get trouble!
  • In The Monsters are due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Mankind is its own enemy. First of all, this theme shows in the story on page 77 and 80 when the crowd is accusing Les Goodman of being an alien and he tells the crowd that anyone who steps on his porch wants trouble and he calls them sick people. This supports the theme because the crowd was accusing him and now he's willing to hurt people he has know for a while because they are accusing him. Another piece of evidence that supports the theme is when Charlie kills Pete Van Horn. This happened on page 82 and it saysCharlie slowly raises the gun. As the figure gets closer and closer, he suddenly pulls the trigger. This supports the theme because Charlie kills Pete without hesitation even though he hadn't done anything wrong. My final piece of evidence is from page 86 when the aliens are talking at the end of the story about how humans are all the same and how Maple Street wasn't anything special. This shows that the theme is mankind is its own enemy because the aliens are talking about how humans turn on each other everywhere not just on Maple Street. In conclusion, the main theme in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is that Mankind is its own enemy.
