- A storm sent by Zeus sweeps them along for nine days before bringing them to the land of the Lotus-eaters, where the natives give some of Odysseus's men the intoxicating fruit of the lotus. As soon as they eat this fruit, they lose all thoughts of home and long for nothing more than to stay there eating more fruit

- The cyclops Polyphemus refuses to treat him well and eats some of his men
- Scylla and Charybids
- The land of the dead is a dark place where spirits dwell after they have departed from their bodies. It is ruled by Hades, The god of the Dead. When people needed to talk to spirits, they needed to make a blood sacrifice.

- Scylla and Charybdis, in Greek mythology, two immortal and irresistible monsters who beset the narrow waters traversed by the hero Odysseus in his wandering
