  • Realizing men cry to and have deep feelings than what lies on the surface.
  • In maturity you cannot have both innocence and compassion.
  • Rising Action 1
  • *singing and tonting mrs. Lottie as a witch*
  • Rising Action 2
  • “I ain’t talking about nobody else, I m talking about me. God knows I try.”
  • “Honey, you took good care of us when youhad it. Ain’t nobody got nothing nowadays.”
  • The main character, Lizabeth, flashes back and remembers her childhood. She travels back to the moment where she was, suddenly more woman than child when her father was crying to her mother and after destroying Mrs. Lotties marigolds with her brother and friends.
  • Climax
  • Lizabeth, her brother and friends throw rocks and sing the witch song to Miss Lottie. The kids torment Miss Lottie and ruin her marigolds to alleviate their boredom.
  • Falling Action
  • Lizabeth's father begins crying because he believes that he has failed his family and his sobs shock Lizabeth. To see her father cry is a further disruption of the innocence of her childhood. Until this moment, she had never heard a man cry before and did not know men ever cried.
  • Resolution
  • She looks up to see Miss Lottie, not as a witch, but as ... a broken old woman who had dared to create beauty in the midst of ugliness and sterility. This marks the end of Lizabeths innocence by recognizing the goodness of Miss Lottie, her compassion is born.
  • Lizabeth realizes that Miss. lottie didn't have much and was trying to make a better place then passes away never replanting the marigolds.
  • After looking back at this time in her life Lizabeth plants marigolds in her garden.
