Serena Joy-the commander's wife. As a wife in the Gilead society, she takes on more specific roles in the house and has more freedom than the handmaids. She is very unhappy in her role as a housewife, despite being an advocate for women staying at home. She is a hypocrite like her husband, and feels trapped in the society that she helped to create. Serena is cruel and manipulative and uses her position of power to actually oppress other women.

Moira, was and is Offred's best friend. She is most often seen in Offred's memories but did reunite with her at the red centre and in jezebel's. Moira is outspoken and rebellious, she is an unconventional character. She is lesbian, which signifies her rejection for Gilead's strictly heterosexual relationships. Even though Moira's fate in the novel is unknown, she is there as Offred's moral compass and is a source of hope for her too.

Offred, the protagonist in the novel, is a handmaid. Her perspective is the one told throughout the novel, which gives us insight to her thoughts and memories. In Gilead, women who have had children before are made to be handmaids, they are then assigned to power families to procreate and have very little power. Despite this, Offred finds ways to undermine the oppressive government in Gilead. She is a complex and dynamic character, who changes from being someone who become submissive to subversive in the new society.
