  • The British prevented soldiers of the Bengal Army from joining the mutineers by disbanding them before they could do so. There were also not many Indians willing to participate in the mutiny.
  • Furthermore, British soldiers on their way to fight the Chinese and those fighting in the Crimean war arrive in India as reinforcements, thus allowing the British to capture Dheli in September of 1857 following bombardment and assault. The Mughal Emperor was then exiled.

  • In early December, Kanpur was recaptured by the British and the city’s rebellion leader Nana Saheb disappears and in March 1858, the rebellion leader, Begum Hazrat Mahal, in Lucknow, flees, so British and Nepalese soldiers were able to regain control over the city.
  • Mutineers who fled theses cities joined Lakshmi Bai in Jhansi, who was able to take control of Gwalior, however she lacked support and so her stronghold did not last long, leading to her death when the city was captured by the British. These events are considered as the end of the mutiny.

  • Control over India was consolidated by the British government from the East India Company.
