A mixed-culture university group preparing for a major presentation. The meeting is at 2:00 PM.At 2:00, the American exchange student, Emily, is already seated with her laptop open.
Marco… the meeting started at two. This project is important. Why are you always late? Don’t you take this seriously?
Sorry, Emily. I’m not trying to disrespect anyone. I just came from helping my cousin with an errand. In the Philippines, time is a bit flexible. People understand delays.

In my culture, being late means you don’t value other people’s time. It affects the whole group.
But here, we balance family, relationships, and work. When someone needs help, we don’t ignore them just to avoid being five or ten minutes late. That’s part of being Filipino.
I get that, but it feels like we’re not on the same page. How can we work together if we don’t treat schedules the same way?
Maybe we misunderstand each other. ‘Filipino time’ doesn’t mean we don’t care. It reflects how we prioritize people and connections… but I see now how it might affect others who value strict punctuality

I understand now that being late affects the group. I’ll adjust and try to come earlier, especially for important tasks.
And I’ll try to understand that your culture values social support and family obligations. I shouldn’t judge your actions only by my standards
