  • Starting Off
  • Meet and Greet
  • The law of the Jungle
  • Starting the day, kids were dropped off by parents one by one saying hi to anyone they knew. The kids age ranged from 5-8 making them in their middle childhood stage. They ranged in height and developmental maturity. There was a definite "big kid" and "little kids" separation.
  • Splitting into factions
  • Finding Nemo
  • My main goal when I got there was to try to view their behavior in a external observation method, but since I was the "new face" I was swarmed and the kids wanted to form a connection to me and play with me.
  • Splitting into factions
  • After the kids got adjusted to me they broke apparent into their factions. their was a distinct developmental gap. The bigger kids tended to be more active and rambunctious not needed as much attention where the smaller ones needed reassurance and wanted to be close to the adults.
  • Cognitive abilities
  • Once the day progressed there was an option for activities, for the most part the younger children all went into watching a movie. There was no outside pressure from the adults to how the children split up, this is how it naturally happened.
  • The older kids went outside to play soccer that day, they had already formed clicks and broke up into boys and girls. The only times that the adults had to step in where when one of the smaller kids tried joining . They could share with each other and could understand working as a team pretty well.
  • I was able to join the kids in a more participant observation status and it was clear that some of the kids had the ability to have more concise conversations in a linear manner, as long as they didn't get too distracted. They all still sat in their clicks they made out on the soccer field.
