- Conflict
- I guess I pulled a Charlie Gordon!
- Rising Action
- Charlie Gordon is a 32 year old who attends a school for people with mental disabilities. He is very motivated to become smarter and to learn to read and write. One day he is approached by a doctor who is looking for a subject on which to conduct an experimental operation that has never been performed on a human before. The operation would allow him to become smarter.
- Climax
- Charlie works as a janitor at Donner's Bakery. His coworkers take advantage of him because of his disability.
- Falling Action
- Charlie has the operation to increase his intelligence. Afterwards his intelligence and knowledges begins to progress at a rapid pace.
- Resolution
- Please leave flowers on Algernon's grave.
- Algernon, the mouse that the experiment was tested on before Charlie, begins to regress in his intelligence. He becomes more and more unintelligent as time goes on, and eventually he dies. Charlie realizes that he himself might start regressing too, and he will eventually lose all his intelligence and be even worse off than he was before the operation.
- Charlie continues his research on his inevitable intellectual regression. His intelligence continues to decline and his productiveness slows. He faces difficulties with simple tasks, and finds his new found talents are leaving him. 
- Charlie writes his final entry as a letter to Ms. Kinnian, a girl who he has fallen in love with. His intelligence has declined passed the point where he was before his operation.
