What Vonnegut is saying, by the government forcing everyone to be equal only hurts the society. Each individual contributes to society in many different ways. Some are talented and creative, some intelligent, some athletic, and others average. If everyone gets participation trophies or earns the same grades, then that can lead to laziness and dependency. People unable to think freely are easily manipulated, which can be dangerous by those in power that have access to the media and public narrative. This allows those in power to stay in power.
Oh crap! I thought insolence was free, I didn't we had to pay for it.
I do as much around here as anyone. Why are they treated so special over there?
Men; today we fight against tyranny! They must never take away our freedom.
Military life sucks! I should be a general by now. Why do I always have to be on patrol? It's just not fair!
Who's bright idea was this?
General, we can't have people questioning orders. They are no longer individuals. They belong to this country and do what they're ordered to do. I am the leader of this Country and everyone will fall in-line...everyone!!!
President: People just can't think for themselves...it's dangerous for democracy.Man I need a nap!

Gentlemen, some in this country think they're above the rest of the nation and must pay for their insolence
I hope we all get participation medals when were done since we are all doing the same job.
