  • You see, Radha ! The iron from dietary sources have no troublesome side effects unlike supplements. Why end up paying for something that will trouble you?
  • Yes, I agree with you that dietary iron is easy on the digestive system as it is absorbed in small intestine. In contrast, iron salts from the supplements are released primarily in the stomach (causing acidity) and are later absorbed in small intestine. But the efficacy of iron supplements in correcting the iron deficiency anemia and thereby reducing risk of premature birth and low birthweight is higher.
  • However on the positive side, iron supplements have predictable and high absorption rates as compared to iron rich food. Also, they can rapidly correct iron deficiency anemia and build iron reserves in body as per the demands of pregnancy.
  • These supplements aren't expensive at all. Moreover, in India, all government health centers provide free iron, Vitamin C, and follic acid tablets to pregnant and lactating females.
  • And Radha, you might face few tolerable side effects like gastritis, heartburn, constipation, and metallic taste in mouth. Sometimes this metallic taste may reduce your desire to consume food.
  • World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends iron, ascorbic acid, and follic acid supplements throughout the pregnancy to eliminate iron deficiency anemia.
  • And aren't these iron supplements expensive?
  • Doctor I'm convinced by this and I will take the iron supplements as recommended. However, I am apprehensive of the side effects.
  • Though taking an additional iron supplement over and above the wholesome food is a matter of personal choice, and right, yet it is one's duty and responsibility towards the community and nation to reduce the healthcare cost of iron deficiency anemia and ensure a healthier cohort of infants.
  • I understand that these supplements are for my safe and healthy pregnancy. Can you tell me how to take these supplements?
  • I am glad that you're convinced Radha. You need to take iron and follic acid tablets once a day, preferably in between meals. To increase the absorption of iron, you can swallow the tablet with lemon water. Avoid taking these pills with milk or other calcium supplements.
  • Then it's sorted doctor ! I will eat iron rich foods and take my supplements regularly.
  • Okay then Radha! We will keep monitoring your haemoglobin levels and your baby's growth at regular intervals. Wish you a safe pregnancy. Take care !
