Many soldiers wrote to their families during the war about their boredom, discomfort, sickness, fear, and horror. Those who lived in camps had pleasant moments like songs, letters from home, and stories. but there was also a dull routine of drills, bad food, marches, and rain.

A private described his wartime experiences, stating that at one point, him and some of the enemy came together, stacked arms, and talked for a while. His men gave them coffee and treated them, and when they began to take position on the field, they began to fire at each other again, but not as hard as before.
