- I was just in science class and learned about Mitosis and Meiosis. I do not understand it so well. Could you explain it to me?
- Of course I can!

- Okay! To begin, there are 5 stages of Mitosis! They are very easy to learn!
- Okay! I'm ready to learn!
- Glide: 5
- The first stage of Mitosis is called Prophase.
- Okay! Prophase I can remember this!
- Glide: 6
- In Prophase our chromosomes shrink and then become visible. After the chromosomes shrink, the nuclear membrane begins to fall apart. Then our centrioles move to opposites sides of our cells. The last step of Prophase, is when the spindle fibers begin to form!
- WOW! That is a lot of information!
- Glide: 7
- Alright! Onto the next step! Prometaphase! The chromosomes continue to shrink in this step. Something called Kinetosomes show up at the centromeres! Kinetosomes attach with something called miotic spindle microtubules.
- Okay! Three major things happen in this step! This should be easy to remember!

- Okay! Next step, Metaphase! During metaphase, the spindle fibers formed during prophase, connect themselves to the sister chromatids, within the centromere.
- Okay, this is starting to be easier to understand!

- Alright! The third step is my favorite! It is called Anaphase!

- Anaphase is when the sister chromatids are ripped apart by the spindle fibers formed in prophase. After these chromatids are ripped apart, they go to opposite sides of the cell!
- Okay! I can remember this stage of Mitosis, by thinking of two sisters fighting and going to opposite sides of their room!

- HaHa! I love that trick! Alright, the next stage is Telophase! In this stage, the cell begins to become two! This means that each side of the cell now has a set of DNA. A nuclear membrane begins to build around these DNA sets! Plus, those spindle fibers start to say goodbye!
- Okay! I will think of Telophase as cutting a sandwich in half! One sandwich becomes two!

- Okay Now lets learn about Meiosis!

- Okay! Lets learn the first 4 stages of Meiosis! Prophase 1: In Prophase 1, genetic material is traded with chromosomes.Metaphase 1: In metaphase 1, chromosomes that are homologous line up in the middle of the cell!Anaphase 1: In Anaphase 1, the chromosomes that are homologous are detached by microtubules to opposites poles.Telophase 1: In this stage, 2 cells begin coming to life. A nuclear membrane also starts to form!

- Alright! Final 4 stages!Prophase 2, Metaphase 2, Anaphase 2, Telophase 2In these stages, the 2 cells formed in the first stage of Meiosis are involved! These 2 cells undergo each stage again. This results in 4 cells. These cells contain half the amount of chromosomes as the original 2 cells!

- Alright. Here are my questions:What will happen if cells grow out of control?Why do all these cells divide?How does cell division maintain genetic continuity?Where did the 1st cell come from?
- Okay! I will try to answer these question as best as I can!

- 1: If cells grow uncontrollably, sickness such as cancer and tumors will occur.2: Cells divide to grow and repair cells that have been damaged!3: Meiosis reduces the # of chromosomes. This means that an offspring will have different genetics than their parents. Which is genetic continuity!4: The first cell comes from the egg and sperm! The egg and sperm create something called a zygote!
