- Vladek Spiegelman meets with his son, Art, to tell him about WWII. Art normally writes down what Vladek says, but he now bought a new tape recorder.

- Vladek shares what it was like after being captured. The Jews were forced into trucks that would bring them to Auschwitz.
- But after a long while, the Germans heard news that the Americans were coming. They abandoned us and the Americans took care of us. Eventually, I was able to go home. The war was over!
- The Jews were forced to run in the cold and put on prisoner clothing. Then when they got inside their arms were branded with a number to identify them.
- "In the snow they threw to us prisoners clothings. They never even looked on what size they threw."..."The shoes were wood shoes."..."They took from us our names [and gave us numbers]." Pg186
- Vladek shows Art his number and then tells him about a priest who visited Vladek and gave him hope because of the numbers on his arm.
- Vladek tells Art how the war ended and how his life could begin to go back to normal.
