  • The Constitution of 1801:
  • In 1801, Toussaint declared himself Governor for Life and established a constitution that abolished slavery. Though still a French colony, Haiti was effectively independent. Napoleon saw this as a threat.
  • Freedom and order must guide our nation.
  • We are free, but for how long?
  • Napoleon will not accept this defiance.
  • Toussaint, you are under arrest!

  • Betrayal and War 1803- 1803:
  • Napoleon sent General Leclerc to reclaim the colony. Toussaint was tricked into a meeting and captured. He died in a French prison in 1803, but his generals, including Jean-Jacques Dessalines, continued the fight.
  • You can imprison me, but not our revolution!
  • We will fight until the last man!
  • We are free! Haiti shall never again be enslaved!

  • The Birth of Haiti:
  • After defeating the French, Dessalines declared Haiti an independent nation, making it the first Black republic and the first nation to permanently abolish slavery. The revolution inspired future independence movements worldwide.
  • Napoleon has lost the jewel of the Caribbean.
  • We are the masters of our destiny!
