- Articles of Confederation
- The Articles are just too weak. We need a new plan boys.
- The Declaration of Independence was written in order to fully separate the American colonies from Great Britain, which forced the Founding Fathers to create a new system for governing the American citizens.
- The New Jersey Plan is better. It gives equal representation to all states and has a unicameral legislature. Also, we do NOT need to count slaves in populations.
- I disagree. The Virginia Plan is better. States are represented by population and there is a bicameral legislature. Also, we want to count slaves.
- The Articles of Confederation was the Founding Fathers' first attempt at creating a centralized government. Althoughit set precedent for the future Constitution, itwas a loose association of states and did not have much power.
- Let's compromise. One house can be the House of Representatives and the states can be represented by population.
- And the other house can have equal representation, like two people from each state. It can be called the Senate.
- Several delgates met at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and decided not to try to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they all voted to completely start over and write a brand new document.
- But what about the issue over if slaves should be counted in the population or not?
- Well, we can count each slave as 3/5 of a person towards the population of a state for representation. How does that sound?
- There was much debate over which plan, The New Jersey Plan or The Virginia Plan, would be better to use to build the Constitution, the new form of government, and the way states would be represented in Congress.
- The delegates finally reached the Connecticut Compromisewhere they used aspects of both plans in order to set up the new government. This compromise is what appeased both big and small states to try to make everyone happy and get them to approve the Constitution.
- The delegates also came to a compromise over the counting of slaves in the population of a state for representation in the House of Representatives. It was called the 3/5 Compromise, which is very significant to the Constitution because it solved another problem of representation in government.
