- Thank you for coming into my office today, Salwa. You said you had concerns about your friend Maddie, correct?
- Yes, Counselor Zebrowksa.
- If you're comfortable to talk about it, would you mind telling me what those are?
- Me and Aniyah think that she might have some sort of eating disorder. She eats a lot then excuses herself to the bathroom, claiming that she's nauseated, and she sometimes comes out a little pale.
- I see...

- I believe Maddie might have what's called bulimia nervosa. It's when someone binge eats then purges what they ate. It's often difficult to recognize due to concealment of eating habits and usually normal weights.
- How do they purge?
- Usually by vomiting, or by laxatives or diuretics. Roughly 3% of women like Maddie will suffer from bulimia.
- And.. what happens to them when they binge and purge?
- People who suffer from bulimia will often feel guilty and emotionally spent after consuming thousands of calories and purging, and there are also numerous health risks such as tooth and enamel decay due to frequent vomiting as well as depression, and menstrual problems for women.

- Gosh... I had no idea that it was that bad. Me and Aniyah want to help Maddie, but we don't want to come off as pushy or anything...
- Salwa, you, Aniyah, and Maddie have a great bond from what I've seen, and you did the right thing by coming and telling someone you trusted. That means the world to me, and to Maddie, but she might not realize it yet. You are not to blame for Maddie's eating disorder.
- I know, but I still feel really guilty. How can I help her recover?
- I can send Maddie some community sources as well as coordinating group sessions with her, you, and Aniyah. That way, she won't feel alone and have her best friends there to support her. Does that sound good?
