- The time is 6:43 pm on Maple Street, USA. Suddenly the people of the town hear a roar and see a flash of light. Steve asks Don if that is a meteor and Don says it is. Mr. Brand comes off his porch and asks Steve what that was and Steve replies and says it was a meteor.
- Climax
- The people of the town start to accuse one and others of being the monster. The three main suspects are Goodman, Charlie and Steve. Goodman is a suspect because his car turned on during the power outage and he is always looking up at the sky, Charlie is a suspect because his lights turned on during the power outage, and Steve is a suspect because his radio turned on during the power outage.
- Falling action
- As the residents of Maple Street become more fearful of the idea that there is a monster among them, they start to turn on one another. Neighbor accuses neighbor of being a monster in their mix who is working with those that landed with the meteor. It doesn't matter if someone had insomnia and gazes up at the night sky or if another is working to restore a ham radio, everyone is now a suspect.
- Resolution
- Does this always happen
- As the neighbors are accusing one another of being a monster, a figure emerges in the night from the woods. Charlie grabs a gun and shoots the figure without hesitation. The problem was that the figure was not a monster, but their friend. Peter. Peter was dead. Charlie was so afraid of the monsters that he killed his own friend.
- With Peter dead, the neighbors were still looking for the monster in their mix. If the monster living on Maple Street was not Peter or Charlie, Steve or Goodman, it had to be someone. That someone was Tommy, the kid who reads comics and told the neighbors to be aware of monsters landing with the meteor. The mob turned on Tommy and ran after him and his mom.
- The two unknown figures discuss that there was no monster. They talk about how all they have to do is turn off the humans' machines, sit back, and watch the community fall apart. One figure explains to the other figure that they don't have to do anything else to ruin the community, the community will tear itself apart on its own. Figure one tells figure two that this happens over and over again in every community they visit.
